On Directing Sashite Kazashite
Ryuro Mori
This was my first time to direct a performance in Nihon Buyo, so although there were so many things I hesitated about, there was so also much that I learned. I was not allowed to use my expertise in ballet in the choreography, but upon creation I weaved a different perspective into the dancers’ body movement to choreograph a piece that can exist as a theatrical dance piece.

This dance piece does not have any singing which communicates emotion or situations, and is danced only by music. Therefore Bach’s music is very dense and high dimensional, and reaches the deepest of emotions. The music lives in a mysterious place – it bounces back when you let dancing blood and bones crash against it, and just when you feel like you are close, it bounces back again, which makes you want to keep trying.

The sound of the drums, both large and small, was filled with nostalgia, and there was a sense of joy that seeped out of a forgotten place when is saw the dancers flip their fans.
The dancers construct and harmonize all directions of the space of the stage – north, east, south, west, above, below, and transverse, into their bodies, as they blend the wavering of their heart into the dance.

I hope that you can witness life in the accumulation of these moments, and send a generous applause. I am very grateful for this opportunity and express my deepest thanks.

I would like to my express special thanks to Mr. Ryuro Mori for choreographing this piece, and to Shue Hanayagi for his performance.
